In a previous article we provided statistics on our 27th Annual Retail Theft Survey which reported on over 1.2 million apprehensions taking place in just 25 large U.S. retail companies in 2014. These companies represented 23,250 stores with combined 2014 annual sales of over $700 billion.
Below are some additional company total statistics from that survey.
Shoplifting Apprehensions 2014:
. 44.0% (11 of 25 retailers) had an increase in apprehensions.
. 56.0% (14 of 25 retailers) had a decrease in apprehensions.
Shoplifting Apprehension Recovery Dollars 2014:
. 72.0% (18 of 25 retailers) had an increase in recovery dollars.
. 28.0% (07 of 25 retailers) had a decrease in recovery dollars.
Shoplifting Recoveries Without an Apprehension 2014:
. 75.0% (12 of 16 retailers) had an increase in recovery dollars.
. 18.8% (03 of 16 retailers) had a decrease in recovery dollars.
. 06.2% (01 of 16 retailers) reported no change in shoplifter recovery dollars.
(Note: Only 16 of our 25 survey participants reported shoplifting recoveries without an apprehension in 2014.)
Dishonest Employee Apprehensions 2014:
. 52.0% (13 of 25 retailers) had an increase in apprehensions.
. 48.0% (12 of 25 retailers) had a decrease in apprehensions.
. One out of every 38.0 employees was apprehended for theft from their employers in 2014. (Based on over 3 million employees.)
Dishonest Employee Apprehension Recovery Dollars 2014:
. 60.0% (15 of 25 retailers) had an increase in recovery dollars.
. 40.0% (10 of 25 retailers) had a decrease in recovery dollars.
2014 Shrinkage Trend:
. 52.0% (13 of 25 retailers) reported an increase in shrink.
. 28.0% (07 of 25 retailers) reported a decrease in shrink.
. 20.0% (05 of 25 retailers) reported no change in their company’s shrink.
Unaccounted-for Theft Losses:
For every $1 recovered by our survey participants, $23.26 was lost to retail theft. Therefore, only 4.3% of total retail theft loses resulted in a recovery.
