25th Annual Retail Theft Survey Stats ‘By Company’

In a previous article we provided overall summary statistics on our 25th Annual Retail Theft Survey which reported on over 1 million apprehensions taking place in just 23 large U.S. retail companies in 2012. These companies represented over 18,900 stores with combined 2012 annual sales just shy of $600 billion. Just after the initial release of our Annual Retail Theft Survey statistics, we receive various inquiries regarding the statistics and some of our thoughts behind the numbers.  Below are some additional “By Company” statistics that may be of interest to you.

Shoplifting Apprehensions 2012:

40.9% (09 of 22 retailers) had an increase.

59.1% (13 of 22 retailers) had a decrease.

(Note: Only 22 of our 23 survey participants reported shoplifting  apprehensions in 2012.)

Shoplifting Apprehension Recovery Dollars 2012:

68.2% (15 of 22 retailers) had an increase.

31.8% (7 of 22 retailers) had a decrease.

(Note: Only 22 of our 23 survey participants reported shoplifting recovery dollars in 2012.)

Shoplifting Recoveries Without an Apprehension 2012:

62.5% (10 of 16 retailers) had an increase.

37.5% (06 of 16 retailers) had a decrease.

Dishonest Employee Apprehensions 2012:

60.9% (14 of 23 retailers) had an increase.

21.7% (05 of 23 retailers) had a decrease.

17.4% (04 of 23 retailers) had no change.

Dishonest Employee Apprehension Recovery Dollars 2012:

65.2% (15 of 23 retailers) had an increase.

34.8% (08 of 23 retailers) had a decrease.

 

2012 Shrinkage Trend:

39.1% (09 of 23 retailers) reported an increase in shrink.

43.5% (10 of 23 retailers) reported a decrease in shrink.

17.4% (04 of 23 retailers) reported no change in their company’s shrink.   $
