Dishonest Employee & Shoplifter Theft Survey Statistics

In a previous article we provided overall summary statistics on our 24th Annual Retail Theft Survey which reported on over 1 million apprehensions taking place in just 24 large U.S. retail companies in 2011. These companies represented over 18,500 stores with combined 2011 annual sales in excess of $589 billion. Just after the initial release of our Annual Retail Theft Survey statistics, we receive various inquiries regarding the statistics and some of our thoughts behind the numbers.  Below are some additional “By Company” statistics that may be of interest to you.

Shoplifting Apprehensions 2011:

< 40.9% (09 of 22 retailers) had an increase.

< 59.1% (13 of 22 retailers) had a decrease.

(Note: Only 22 of our 24 survey participants reported shoplifting  apprehensions in 2011.)

Shoplifting Apprehension Recovery Dollars 2011:

< 54.5% (12 of 22 retailers) had an increase.

< 45.5% (10 of 22 retailers) had a decrease.

(Note: Only 22 of our 24 survey participants reported shoplifting recovery dollars in 2011.)

Shoplifting Recoveries Without an Apprehension 2011:

< 81.2% (13 of 16 retailers) had an increase.

< 18.8% (03 of 16 retailers) had a decrease.

(Note: Only 16 of our 24 survey participants reported shoplifting recoveries without an apprehension in 2011.)

Dishonest Employee Apprehensions 2011:

< 45.8% (11 of 24 retailers) had an increase.

< 33.3% (08 of 24 retailers) had a decrease.

< 20.9% (05 of 24 retailers) had no change.

< 33.3% (08 of 24 retailers) had a decrease.

2011 Shrinkage Trend:

< 45.8% (11 of 24 retailers) reported an increase in shrink.

< 41.7% (10 of 24 retailers) reported a decrease in shrink.

< 12.5% (03 of 24 retailers) reported no change in their company’s shrink.   $
